'Twas the night before the Iowa State Fair, when all thro' the town Everyone was stirring, even a clown...
Tomorrow begins 11 days of a longtime Iowa tradition. The Iowa State Fair. But tonight was a different tradition that I never experienced before. The parade + the unofficial opening.
Only in Iowa will you see a parade at the foothill of the state capitol, a tiny car of clowns, followed by a long line of bright green John Deere tractors, and of course every political campaign years before the next election, because what would it be without those? Everyone comes together to celebrate this great state we call Iowa.
I never knew how awesome it would be to visit the fair the night before! Best parts: It's free! It's the cleanest you will ever see it. Not everything is open, but lots is. It's calm and you will likely find a place to sit and relax.
My favorite new edition this year is an amazing sculpture of a pig and his friends riding a roller coaster. Again, only in Iowa would this seem completely normal. And I absolutely love it!
Not being a huge fan of parades and fairs, I am a fan of this. And doing it the night before for sure! I will likely go back sometime this week, but it was a great experience to see my city and my state come together tonight for all of the right reasons.
